Latin American fight in the early hours of the morning in Saudi Arabia: in his debut in the Gulf country, Mexican Saul “Canelo” Alvarez faces Cuban William Scull in an attractive fight this weekend in Riyadh.
The fight will take place Saturday night, Sunday night, Saudi Arabian time, in an evening geared toward the American public, where the unification of the super middleweight titles will be at stake.
Canelo holds the WBC, WBA, and WBO belts in the weight class at 34 years old. He lost the IBF (International Boxing Federation) title when he chose to face Puerto Rican Edgar Berlanga, whom he defeated in September in Las Vegas, instead of Scull, who will defend that title in the Riyadh ring.
Accustomed to fighting in North America, he is now expanding his geographical horizons after almost twenty years as a professional and has accepted a lucrative offer from Riyadh Seasons for four fights.
“This is nothing new for me. But for him, it’s going to be different, that’s for sure,” Alvarez said in a defiant tone during Thursday’s press conference to introduce the fight.
For many, this fight could serve as a “warm-up” before the highly anticipated showdown between Canelo and Terence Crawford later this year, according to rumors of advanced negotiations.
But the first step toward that would be a victory on Saturday against Scull, who, according to experts, is far from defeated.
“It’s a fight, and I’m prepared. Canelo is a great boxer. It will be a tough fight, but he’s also a man, like me,” said the 32-year-old Cuban fighter, who remains undefeated.
Canelo Alvarez, for his part, has a record of 62-2-2: he has won 62 fights (39 of them by KO), has ed two draws, and has lost two. His two losses were on points, by referee decision, against Floyd Mayweather Jr in 2013 and against Dmitry Bivol in 2022.
